(Damasks) A rose of genuine historical intrigue, this ancient Damask bears softly perfumed, semi-double blooms in blush white, randomly striped and mottled with pink — no two flowers quite alike. It flowers in summer with an unpredictable, almost painterly charm that makes each bloom a small discovery. Known since before 1551 and of mysterious origin, it is said to take its name from the warring Houses of York and Lancaster, whose emblems were the white and red rose respectively.
