There are two different types of rose you can plant in your garden

There are two different types of rose that you can plant in your garden, a bare root rose or a potted rose.

A bare root rose is a young rose plant in its dormant state, consisting of just the pruned stems and roots without any leaves, flowers or foliage on it whereas a potted rose is a rose that has been planted in a container and has had a little longer to grow.

Take a look at our table below to find out which type of rose is right for you.

Planting A Bare Root Rose

Which Type Of Rose Is Right For Me?

Our team often gets asked whether a bare root rose or a potted rose is better, but the answer is completely down to opinion and personal preference. Take a look at our comparison table to see the benefits of each type of rose.
POTTED ROSES

A young rose that has been planted in a container and has had a little longer to grow

Perfect for those wanting to plant a rose in the warmer months of the year

Available to purchase throughout the year. New stock arrives each year in the spring

Available to purchase online or in our garden centre

Provides instant colour and foliage during flowering season

Can be kept in it's pot for a few weeks as long as it is getting plenty of water

Will need regular watering and feeding from the time of planting, throughout the summer

Will reach your desired size quicker as it is a bigger plant to begin with

BARE ROOT ROSES

A young rose in its dormant state, consisting of just the pruned stems and roots without any leaves, flowers or foliage

Perfect for those wanting to plant a rose throughout the colder months of the year

Available for pre-order from April each year for delivery from November

Only available to order through our website

Allows the plant to put down firm roots before the growing season

Can be stored in a bucket of water for up to two weeks if you're not ready to plant it

Once planted won't need watering or feeding until the spring when it starts to produce leaves

A more affordable option for those who are working on a larger project and want to buy in bulk

Easier to transport if ordering in large quantities
