Roses

Bare root roses are lifted and sent dormant, only available November to March — they're a great-value, traditional way to plant and establish very well when planted straight into the ground while the plant is resting. Potted roses are container-grown and available to plant year-round, which suits gardeners who want to plant outside the bare-root season, or who'd like to see the plant established in its pot first. Both give you exactly the same rose long-term.

It depends on the spot and what you want from it: shrub roses suit borders and general planting, climbers and ramblers need a wall, fence or structure to train onto, and patio or standard roses work well in pots and smaller spaces. Our Rose Finder quiz is the quickest way to narrow this down — it filters by colour, growing position, fragrance and more.

This varies a lot by type — climbers and ramblers can reach several metres and need real room to spread, shrub roses are typically a metre or so in height and width, and patio or miniature roses stay much more compact and are well suited to pots. As a general rule of thumb, leave enough space between plants for good airflow once they're fully grown, which also helps keep them healthy. Check the individual product page for each variety's typical size, or get in touch and our Rosarians can advise.
