(Modern Climbers) Vivid crimson-red blooms of cupped, semi-double form tumble forth in generous clusters from early summer well into autumn, filling the air with a pleasing, warm fragrance. The foliage is a lustrous, deep green, providing a handsome foil to the richly coloured flowers, which are produced with exceptional freedom throughout the long season.

  • Lady's Mantle

    Lady's Mantle

    Why grow this with Sympathie?

Soft, scalloped leaves and frothy lime-green flowers make an easy edging that catches morning dew and softens the front of a rose border.

  • Allium

    Allium

    Why grow this with Sympathie?

Its architectural purple globes rise above rose foliage in early summer, and its onion-family scent is thought to help confuse pests that target roses.

  • Lavender

    Why grow this with Sympathie?

A classic rose companion: its silvery foliage and compact habit hide bare lower stems, and it shares roses' love of full sun and free-draining soil.

Frequently asked questions

Bare-root Sympathie roses are best planted during their dormant season, from November to March, which is also when we dispatch them. Potted roses are grown in containers and can be planted at any time of year — just avoid periods of hard frost or drought, and water thoroughly after planting.

Every rose we sell is covered by our 1-year Rose Guarantee, so you can plant Sympathie with confidence. See our Rose Guarantee page for the full details.

Often, yes — we grow our roses ourselves and stock varies through the season, so a variety that's sold out can come back. Use the "Notify me" button above to be emailed the moment Sympathie is back in stock.

Sympathie's mature growth range is 300cm x 240cm (10ft x 8ft). Growing conditions such as soil, sunlight, feeding and pruning can affect the final size, so treat this as a guide rather than an exact figure.

Climbing roses produce fewer, larger flowers on stiffer, more upright growth, and most repeat-flower through summer with a light prune each year. Rambling roses grow much more vigorously on long, flexible canes and produce one spectacular flush of smaller flowers in early-to-midsummer, usually pruned just after flowering rather than in winter.

Sympathie belongs to our Modern Climbers family of roses.
