(Modern Climbers) The large, semi-double blooms of Handel are a study in elegant contrast — creamy silvery-white petals exquisitely edged in shades of rose-pink and red, creating a striking, painterly effect against the dark stems and glossy, deep green foliage. Repeat-flowering generously from early summer well into autumn, it is both vigorous and fragrant, making it one of the most distinctive and reliably rewarding of all climbing roses.

Vulgar colouring

Let's start with the positives. It is extremely healthy and disease resistant. Very good repeat. Vigorous. But the colour is in my view blatant and vulgar. And describing it as fragrant is a real stretch. I grew this rose for years and for some very light fragrance maybe once or twice. It is better in bud when the pink is not so tarty!

Great companion plants for Handel

A traditional climbing partner for roses - Group 3 viticella types are pruned hard each spring alongside roses and won't overwhelm their host.

    Why grow this with Handel?

A low, spreading habit that shades the soil around a rose's roots, helping keep them cool while suppressing weeds at the base of the border.

  • Lady's Mantle

    Why grow this with Handel?

Soft, scalloped leaves and frothy lime-green flowers make an easy edging that catches morning dew and softens the front of a rose border.

  • Allium

    Why grow this with Handel?

Its architectural purple globes rise above rose foliage in early summer, and its onion-family scent is thought to help confuse pests that target roses.

  • Lavender

    Why grow this with Handel?

A classic rose companion: its silvery foliage and compact habit hide bare lower stems, and it shares roses' love of full sun and free-draining soil.

Frequently asked questions

Bare-root Handel roses are best planted during their dormant season, from November to March, which is also when we dispatch them. Potted roses are grown in containers and can be planted at any time of year — just avoid periods of hard frost or drought, and water thoroughly after planting.

Every rose we sell is covered by our 1-year Rose Guarantee, so you can plant Handel with confidence. See our Rose Guarantee page for the full details.

Often, yes — we grow our roses ourselves and stock varies through the season, so a variety that's sold out can come back. Use the "Notify me" button above to be emailed the moment Handel is back in stock.

Handel's mature growth range is 360cm x 240cm (12ft x 8ft). Growing conditions such as soil, sunlight, feeding and pruning can affect the final size, so treat this as a guide rather than an exact figure.

Climbing roses produce fewer, larger flowers on stiffer, more upright growth, and most repeat-flower through summer with a light prune each year. Rambling roses grow much more vigorously on long, flexible canes and produce one spectacular flush of smaller flowers in early-to-midsummer, usually pruned just after flowering rather than in winter.

Handel belongs to our Modern Climbers family of roses.
