(Teas (bush and climbing forms)) Rich, deep rosy-red blooms shading to warm pink unfurl with an exquisite, old-fashioned charm, their generous petals releasing a powerful, heady fragrance that is quintessential of the Tea family at its finest. Remarkably free-flowering over an exceptionally long season from early summer well into autumn, this is a rose of uncommon generosity and beauty. Introduced in the 1830s, 'Bon Silène' was among the most celebrated Tea roses of the Victorian era, beloved by florists and gardeners alike on both sides of the Channel.

Frequently asked questions

Bare-root Bon Silene roses are best planted during their dormant season, from November to March, which is also when we dispatch them. Potted roses are grown in containers and can be planted at any time of year — just avoid periods of hard frost or drought, and water thoroughly after planting.

Every rose we sell is covered by our 1-year Rose Guarantee, so you can plant Bon Silene with confidence. See our Rose Guarantee page for the full details.

Often, yes — we grow our roses ourselves and stock varies through the season, so a variety that's sold out can come back. Use the "Notify me" button above to be emailed the moment Bon Silene is back in stock.

Bon Silene's mature growth range is 120cm x 90cm (4ft x 3ft). Growing conditions such as soil, sunlight, feeding and pruning can affect the final size, so treat this as a guide rather than an exact figure.

Climbing roses produce fewer, larger flowers on stiffer, more upright growth, and most repeat-flower through summer with a light prune each year. Rambling roses grow much more vigorously on long, flexible canes and produce one spectacular flush of smaller flowers in early-to-midsummer, usually pruned just after flowering rather than in winter.

Bon Silene belongs to our Teas (bush and climbing forms) family of roses.
