(Noisettes and close relatives) Few roses carry the weight of history so gracefully as Maréchal Niel, whose deeply double, nodding blooms glow with a rich, luminous golden-yellow and exhale one of the most exquisitely potent tea fragrances in the rose world. The flowers repeat reliably into autumn, each blossom borne with an elegant, pendant charm that gives the plant an air of languid abundance. Named in honour of Adolphe Niel, a distinguished French Marshal under Napoleon III, this 1864 classic remains an enduring treasure of the Victorian garden.
