(Damasks) Few roses command such reverence as this nineteenth-century masterpiece, bearing exquisitely formed, very double blooms of the purest white, each one centred with a distinctive emerald-green button eye. Richly and intoxicatingly fragrant, the flowers appear in generous clusters throughout midsummer, their cupped, incurved petals achieving a perfection that has captivated rosarians for nearly two centuries. Bred in 1831 by Julien-Alexandre Hardy, head gardener at the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, it was named as a tender tribute to his wife, Félicité.
