(Sweet Briars and Canina Hybrids) Bearing single blooms of soft salmon-orange touched with warm pink and a luminous yellow heart, Lord Penzance offers a fleeting but unforgettable flowering season in midsummer, followed by jewel-bright red hips that carry the display well into autumn. Its foliage beckons with the fresh, sweet scent of green apples — a captivating inheritance from its Rosa eglanteria parentage — so that even on a still day, simply brushing past the leaves releases a delicious fragrance. This rose was bred and introduced in 1894 by the rose-loving Victorian judge and dramatist Lord Penzance himself.

Frequently asked questions

Bare-root Lord Penzance roses are best planted during their dormant season, from November to March, which is also when we dispatch them. Potted roses are grown in containers and can be planted at any time of year — just avoid periods of hard frost or drought, and water thoroughly after planting.

Every rose we sell is covered by our 1-year Rose Guarantee, so you can plant Lord Penzance with confidence. See our Rose Guarantee page for the full details.

Often, yes — we grow our roses ourselves and stock varies through the season, so a variety that's sold out can come back. Use the "Notify me" button above to be emailed the moment Lord Penzance is back in stock.

Lord Penzance's mature growth range is 210cm x 180cm (7ft x 6ft). Growing conditions such as soil, sunlight, feeding and pruning can affect the final size, so treat this as a guide rather than an exact figure.

Species roses are the original wild roses that all garden roses descend from, largely unchanged by breeding. They typically flower once, in a simple five-petalled form, and many go on to produce decorative autumn hips — a good choice for wildlife gardens and naturalistic planting.

Lord Penzance belongs to our Sweet Briars and Canina Hybrids group of species roses.
