(Hybrid Teas) Few roses have captured the imagination quite like Blue Moon, with its large, beautifully formed blooms in a hauntingly luminous shade of lilac-mauve that remains unrivalled among so-called 'blue' roses. The shapely, high-centred flowers carry a rich, heady fragrance and are borne on strong, upright stems throughout summer and well into autumn, making it as rewarding to cut for the vase as it is to admire in the garden.

Plants that grow well alongside Hybrid Tea roses like Blue Moon.

  • Catmint

    Catmint

Why grow this with Blue Moon?

Its billowing grey-green foliage softens bare rose stems, and its long flowering season keeps pollinators visiting long after the first flush of roses is over.

  • Lavender

    Lavender

Why grow this with Blue Moon?

A classic rose companion: its silvery foliage and compact habit hide bare lower stems, and it shares roses' love of full sun and free-draining soil.

  • Allium

    Allium

Why grow this with Blue Moon?

Its architectural purple globes rise above rose foliage in early summer, and its onion-family scent is thought to help confuse pests that target roses.

  • Salvia

    Salvia

Why grow this with Blue Moon?

Its upright flower spikes contrast beautifully with rounded rose blooms, and it flowers for months, keeping colour going in the border once the first flush of roses fades.

  • Hardy Geranium

    Hardy Geranium

Why grow this with Blue Moon?

A low, spreading habit that shades the soil around a rose's roots, helping keep them cool while suppressing weeds at the base of the border.

  • Lady's Mantle

    Lady's Mantle

Why grow this with Blue Moon?

Soft, scalloped leaves and frothy lime-green flowers make an easy edging that catches morning dew and softens the front of a rose border.

Frequently asked questions

Bare-root Blue Moon roses are best planted during their dormant season, from November to March, which is also when we dispatch them. Potted roses are grown in containers and can be planted at any time of year — just avoid periods of hard frost or drought, and water thoroughly after planting.

Every rose we sell is covered by our 1-year Rose Guarantee, so you can plant Blue Moon with confidence. See our Rose Guarantee page for the full details.

Often, yes — we grow our roses ourselves and stock varies through the season, so a variety that's sold out can come back. Use the "Notify me" button above to be emailed the moment Blue Moon is back in stock.

Blue Moon's mature growth range is 90cm x 60cm (3ft x 2ft). Growing conditions such as soil, sunlight, feeding and pruning can affect the final size, so treat this as a guide rather than an exact figure.

Hybrid Tea roses have the classic, elegant rose shape: large, high-centred blooms carried mostly one to a stem, ideal for cutting and for a more formal look in the garden. They typically repeat-flower reliably from early summer into autumn.
