(Rugosas) Sumptuous and richly coloured, the large, loosely formed blooms of Roseraie de l'Hay unfurl in waves of deep crimson-purple, opening almost flat to reveal their velvety, generously petalled centres. Flowering with remarkable persistence from early summer well into autumn, this magnificent rose fills the air with an intoxicating fragrance — a heady sweetness reminiscent of almonds. Named after the celebrated French rose garden La Roseraie du Val-de-Marne at L'Haÿ-les-Roses, near Paris, it remains one of the finest purple roses ever raised.
